The author of four books, Sander, one of the leading English language experts on the Baltic region,
is also a contributor to The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, and other publications.
When he is not visiting Finland he is based in Ithaca, New York, where he spends his time
mentoring students at his alma mater, Cornell University, and musing on the eternal verities.

An important aspect of Savo dialect is not only the way the words sound but also a bit silly way to see the world. That makes Merja’s text so wonderful to read and laugh with! Marianna Heikinheimo (s. 1963) is a Helsinki-based architect and a researcher of architectural history. She is also the managing director of Archtours Ltd, which is a travel agency specialized in organizing architectural tours in the Nordic region.
Heikinheimo together with her research team has recently finished a building historical survey of buildings 20, 22 and 24 on Aleksanterinkatu in the Leijona block, which was commissioned by Tilakeskus of the City of Helsinki.

The Bock house, the Burtz house and the Hellenius house
The Bock house, the Burtz house and the Hellenius house, all from the late 18th century, stand on the southern side of the Senate Square. They were reshaped in the early 19th century as parts of the new monumental centre. The Senate Square was in actual fact a display window of the newly founded Grand Duchy to Europe. The influence of German architect Carl Ludwig Engel is mostly clearly seen in the grand exterior and the unique interiors of the Bock house. All the three buildings came to ownership of the City of Helsinki by the end of the 19th century and since then have been understood as one whole along with the former hotel Seurahuone in the same block. There have been two architectural competitions about the Helsinki City Hall to this block during the 20th century. Finally the three buildings underwent a thorough restoration in the 1980s, which was designed and conducted by architect Aarne Ruusuvuori. Today the Empire style layers are blended to more recent minimalist spaces.

Reading of children’s book Mörkerboken at Arkadia!
Hannele Mikaela Taivassalo, writer, and Lena Frölander-Ulf, illustrator, will be performing together at Arkadia Bookshop on Wednesday 10.2 at 6pm. They will be reading their new critically acclaimed children’s book “Mörkerboken” (the title in English would be something like “The Book of Darkness”). It is a classic fairy tale, with a new and quite a different twist to it. The illustrations by Frölander-Ulf are wonderfully evocative and beautiful. The event is targeted at children (of all ages!), and is moderated by Mathias Rosenlund. Welcome!

Mörkerboken på Arkadia!
Hannele Mikaela Taivassalo och Lena Frölander-Ulf kommer att uppträda tillsammans på Arkadia Bookshop! Den 10.2 kl. 18.00 kommer de att läsa sin nya och hyllade barnbok “Mörkerboken“. Det är en saga med klassiska motiv, men med en grepp som är nytt och annorlunda. Precis som i tidigare verk av Taivassalo, är att spränga gränser ett centralt tema. Boken är illustrerad med Frölander-Ulfs underbart suggestiva och vackra bilder. Tillställningen är riktad till barn av alla de åldrar. Mathias Rosenlund fungerar som arrangör för tillställningen, och kommer att presentera gästerna. Välkomna för att trivas!
Hannele Mikaela Taivassalo tycker att dramatik bör få vara litterärt, att prosa ska få vara poetiskt och att lyrik hemskt gärna får ha dramatiska element. Det kan för all del också vara helt tvärt om, och alldeles oväntat. I allt berättande, läsande och lyssnande är det det hemlighetsfulla, outsagda och kanske till och med det onåbara som lockar mest. Taivassalo är författare till bl.a. Runebergsprisvinnaren “Fem Knivar Hade Andrej Krapl” och novellsamlingen “kärlek kärlek hurra hurra”. Hon har även tidigare skrivit en barnbok, och har dessutom skrivit dramatik. Hannele Mikaela är grundande medlem av Skunkteatern.
Lena Frölander-Ulf har förutom “Mörkerboken” illustrerat “Sagan om prinsessan Bulleribång”, som även den kom till i samarbete med Hannele Mikaela Taivassalo. Hon karaktäriserar sig i första hand som illustratör, därefter som grafisk designer och sedan berättare. För övrigt kan sägas att Lena älskar att sträcka på sig som en björn och dricka mängder av kaffe.
Mathias Rosenlund studerar (fortfarande!) litteratur och historia vid universitetet i Helsingfors. Han arbetar för närvarande på en novellsamling som kommer att handla om svårigheter i relationerna mellan barn och föräldrar, och om hur vardagen ibland kan öppnas för små glimtar av något mörkt.

Teemu Ikonen: 1700-luvun eurooppalaisen kirjallisuuden ensyklopedia
Euroopassa koettiin 1700-luvulla kirjallinen kukoistuskausi, jolloin kehitettiin uudenlaisia kertomisen tapoja. Kertomuksia pidettiin oivana keinona maailman hahmottamiseen, mutta toisaalta tieteellisen maailmankatsomuksen vakiintuminen sai monet väheksymään romaaneja ja muita sepitteitä. 1700-luku oli myös satiirin kulta-aikaa, ja ajan julkaisut ovat täynnä muotokokeiluja, kielellisiä pelejä ja jopa räikeitä huijauksia. Näitä tehtiin kaupallisista syistä, sensuurin kiertämiseksi tai silkasta keksimisen ilosta.
1700-luvun eurooppalaisen kirjallisuuden ensyklopedia avaa yleistajuisesti näitä aikakauden kirjalliselle kulttuurille tunnusomaisia ilmiöitä, käsityksiä ja toimintatapoja Swiftistä Austeniin. Se koostuu aakkosellisista hakusanoista sekä esseemuotoisista tekstianalyyseista ja katsauksista. Teemu Ikonen (b. 1969) is a freelance scholar, writer and lecturer who has studied and taught comparative literature at the University of Helsinki. Among his research interests are: 18th century literature; psychoanalysis; narrative theory; history of experimental writing; Derridean deconstruction. His publications include a PhD thesis on Denis Diderot, articles on psychoanalytic and other theories of narrative; multimedia poetry; literary encyclopedias; and satire in the 18th century. 2006 Ikonen worked as a Faculty Research Affiliate in the Project Narrative at the Ohio State University, USA. You are most warmly welcome to a book-launching on Monday 1.2 at 6pm: Stanisław Jerzy Lec’s “Siistimättömiä mietelmiä” with translator Veikko Suvanto and Martti Anhava.
To celebrate the centenary of Lec’s birth last year, the publishing house Siltala brought out a new edition of the book, about twice as large, supplemented by translations published previously only in a periodical and by completely new translations made from the original Polish. Veikko Suvanto, one of the translators of the book, will give a short presentation on Lec’s life and work, followed by a discussion between him and Martti Anhava, as well as questions from the audience.
The talk will be in Finnish but questions can be asked in English, Swedish, Polish and a number of other languages.

Kirjanjulkistustilaisuus: Stanisław Jerzy Lecin ”Siistimättömiä mietelmiä”, puhujina Veikko Suvanto ja Martti Anhava
Puolalainen runoilija ja satiirikko Stanisław Jerzy Lec nousi maailmanmaineeseen 60-luvun alussa, kun hänen 50-luvun puolestavälistä lähtien julkaisemat pisteliäät mietelmänsä alkoivat ilmestyä useina erikielisinä käännöksinä – mm. saksaksi nimellä ”Unfrisierte Gedanken” ja englanniksi nimellä ”Unkempt Thoughts”. Englannin-, ruotsin- ja saksankielisten käännösten pohjalta tehty ensimmäinen suomennosvalikoima ilmestyi vuonna 1968 nimellä ”Vastakarvaan” ja on sittemmin saanut kulttikirjan aseman.
Viime vuonna vietetyn Lecin satavuotisjuhlan kunniaksi kustannusosakeyhtiö Siltala julkaisi valikoimasta täydennetyn, noin kaksi kertaa laajemman laitoksen, johon on lisätty aiemmin vain Parnassossa julkaistu suomennossarja sekä kaksi sarjaa uusia, suoraan puolasta tehtyjä suomennoksia. Kirjan suomentamiseen osallistunut Veikko Suvanto kertoo tilaisuuden aluksi lyhyesti Lecin elämästä ja tuotannosta, minkä jälkeen hän ja Martti Anhava keskustelevat aiheesta ja vastailevat yleisön kysymyksiin. Kysymyksiä voi esittää myös muilla kielillä kuin suomeksi.
Veikko Suvanto (s. 1979) on opiskellut slaavilaisia kieliä Helsingin yliopistossa ja Jagiellonian yliopistossa Krakovassa, missä hän nykyisin asuu ja työskentelee vapaana kääntäjänä ja suomen kielen opettajana. Hän suomensi puolasta ”Siistimättömiin mietelmiin” sisältyvät uudet aforismit. Hänen suomennoksiaan venäläisestä runoudesta ilmestyi hiljattain Tuli & Savu -lehden venäläiselle nykyrunoudelle omistetussa erikoisnumerossa.
Martti Anhava (s. 1955) on helsinkiläinen esseisti ja suomentaja. Hän on julkaissut kolme esseekokoelmaa, joista viimeisin, ”Totta puhuen”, ilmestyi 2004. Hän on suomentanut kaunokirjallisuutta pääasiassa venäjästä (Tshehov, Tolstoi, Dostojevski) ja ranskasta (Pascal, Proust) ja työskentelee parhaillaan ”Karamazovin veljesten” uuden suomennoksen parissa. Hänen isänsä Tuomas Anhava suomensi ”Vastakarvaan”-teoksessa ja Parnassossa julkaistut Lecin mietelmät, ja hän on työskennellyt nyt julkistettavan teoksen parissa sekä vanhojen että uusien suomennosten editorina.
The Polish poet and satirist Stanisław Jerzy Lec (1909–1966) rose to international fame in the beginning of the sixties, when the acerbic aphorisms he had published in Polish periodicals since the mid-fifties were translated into various languages – into German as “Unfrisierte Gedanken” and into English as “Unkempt Thoughts”. The first Finnish edition, made on the basis of English, German and Swedish translations, was published in 1968 under the title “Vastakarvaan” and has since gained the status of a cult book.
Veikko Suvanto (b. 1979) has studied Slavic languages in the University of Helsinki and the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland, where he is currently living and working as a freelance translator and teacher of Finnish. He translated from Polish the new aphorisms included in “Siistimättömiä mietelmiä”. His translations of Russian poetry and criticism were published recently in a special issue of the periodical Tuli & Savu devoted to contemporary Russian poetry.
Martti Anhava (b. 1955) is an essayist and translator living in Helsinki. He has published three books of essays, the latest of which, “Totta puhuen” (“Truth to Tell”), came out in 2004. He has translated literature mainly from Russian (Chekhov, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky) and French (Pascal, Proust) and is currently working on a translation of “The Brothers Karamazov”. The translations of Lec’s aphorisms in the original Finnish edition were made by his late father, Tuomas Anhava, and he worked on the new book as an editor of both his father’s translations and the new ones by Veikko Suvanto.

Psykoanalyysi ja ajan henki
Psykoanalyysi istuu perin huonosti nykyaikaan. Se ei ole ajan hengen mukainen tapa selittää ja hoitaa mielen ongelmia. Tästä havainnosta tuskin kukaan on eri täysin mieltä, vaikka ilmiötä voidaan ymmärtää, selittää ja arvottaa hyvinkin eri tavoin. Psykoanalyysin asema mielenterveysalan kokonaisuudessa on heikentynyt nopeasti viimeisten parinkymmenen vuoden aikana. Psykoanalyyttinen tai yleisemmin psykodynaaminen ajattelu ei enää kuulu psykiatrien toimenkuvaan. Samaan aikaan psykoterapioiden on kenttä on nopeasti monimuotoistunut ja psykoanalyysi menettänyt kentällä asemiaan.
Pohdin alustuksessani ajan henkeen kuuluvia yleisiä ominaispiirteitä, jotka selittävät tai ainakin tekevät ymmärrettäväksi psykoanalyysin epäajanmukaisuutta. Tällaisia ovat yleinen kiire ja elämisen rytmin nopeutuminen; taloudellisten arvojen ja arviointiperusteiden yhä hallitsevampi asema; biologisen ihmiskäsityksen vahvistuminen ja taipumus väheksyä psyykkisiä tekijöitä; psyykkisten ongelmien ymmärtämisen syrjäytyminen niiden hallinnoinnin tieltä; yksilöllisyyden heikkeneminen ja mediakulttuurissa elävien kollektiivisten psyykkisten rakenteiden voimistuminen. Kokoavasti voi sanoa, että psykoanalyysin tarjoama mahdollisuus syventyä analyytikon avustuksella kaikessa rauhassa omaan psyykkiseen todellisuuteen ja yksilölliseen merkitysmaailmaan vaikuttaa nykyajassa yhä vähemmän itsestään selvältä. Alustuksessani pohdin ensisijaisesti sitä, mitä tämä kaikki kertoo nykyajasta ja sen hengestä.

Psychoanalysis and Zeitgeist
Especially as a method of treating psychic problems, as a form therapy, psychoanalysis looks for many people old-fashioned and unattractive. It seems to be out of the time. Medicaments and other forms of therapy are dominating psychiatric and psychotherapeutic interventions. The situation has drastically changed in two decades, and not only in Finland. By focusing on the causes and reasons for this general trend one may understand more generally something important about the present Zeitgeist. This is at least what I hope to do in my talk. My claim is that the present Zeitgeist is characterised by a number phenomena that tend to exclude psychoanalysis. Among them are general shortage of time; monopoly of economic values; biologism and disregard of psychic factors; administration of psychic problems instead of understanding and sharing them; weakening of genuine individuality and strengthening of collective media driven psychic structures. For a suffering individual psychoanalysis means a possibility to focus with the help of the analyst and without any external goals or time limits on her own psychic reality and personal life history. In out present time such a possibility has lost much of its plausibility and attraction.

About Katrina Goldman:
In Katrina Goldman’s debut solo concert, she plays a programme of Bach, Debussy, Chopin, Haydn and Toivo Kuula. Katrina started piano at the age of four, and since 2001 has been studying piano at the Itähelsingin musiikkiopisto under the direction of Leena Nikula. She has been awarded stipends for the quality of her playing during her various examinations at the musiikkiopisto. She also studies violin as a second instrument, sings in a choir, and is very interested in maths and science. Her favourite composers are Bach, Beethoven and Debussy. Her motto for playing the piano could be borrowed from “The Importance of Being Earnest”: “I don’t play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. I keep science for Life.”
