Friday 29.10 at 6pm: “The Grand Tour” by Gerald Steinmetz and Kristiina Närhi

Dear Friend of Arkadia, You are warmly welcome to a talk by Gerald Steinmetz and Kristiina Närhi. They will tell fascinating tales of the “Grand Tour” they recreated for Americans in the eighties on Friday 29.10 at 6pm. Warm regards, Ian www.arkadiabookshop.fiEntrance is free and green tea will be served. A donation of €2 (or more!) is suggested and would be very welcome. The Grand Tour by Gerald Steinmetz The 18th century Grand Tour was devised for young English Lords as an educational jaunt through the Low Countries to Paris, along the Rhine to the Alps and onwards to Italy. It inspired tons of travel nostalgia – the Art Market, postcards and souvenirs, poetic longings and dodgy foreign dishes. Two London residents from the Eighties, an Aussie and a Finn, Gerald Steinmetz and Kristiina Närhi, recreated this Grand Tour for Americans. They tell of their days as Tour Managers for TWA and Ollson Travel when you could “do” the European Grand Tour more or less as the Nobs did. Cruise boats nosing into Baltic ports seem to be carrying on the tradition.
