On two consecutive Fridays (Part 1 : Friday 23.5 at 6pm), pianist Martin Malmgren performs and discusses the complete Mazurkas for piano by Karol Szymanowski.

The concerts will also include Mazurkas by Frederic Chopin, Roman Maciejewski, and Paavo Heininen.

As the First World War came to an end, the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski’s musical language slowly started to transform in a new direction. With the discovery of the folk music of the Górale region in the south of Poland, Szymanowski became concerned with “crystallizing elements of tribal heritage” in his music. Among the peaks in his compositional output from this final period, we find his Mazurkas for piano, which incorporate the scales and melodies of Górale folk music with the highly eclectic, paneuropean musical style of Szymanowski. With so many new national border changes following WW1, Szymanowki’s plethora of influences seem to assert that if one digs deep enough, apparently different ‘national roots’ are found to be intertwined and that imposing boundaries cuts off essential sources of inspiration and limits the freedom of the artist. In addition to the Mazurkas by Szymanowski, pianist Martin Malmgren will also perform Mazurkas by Frederic Chopin, Roman Maciejewski and Paavo Heininen.
