Gordon F.Sander and The Battle of Finland 1939-1940 Tuesday 24.2 at 6pm

Dear friend of Arkadia,

The bookshop is pleased to welcome you to attend a reading by the noted journalist, historian, and long-time Fennophile Gordon F. Sander on Tuesday, February 24th at 6 pm

One of the best known English language writers about Finland, Sander has been reporting from Finland for over thirty years for “The New York Times,” “The International Herald Tribune,” “The Sunday Times of London,” and many other publications on both sides of the Atlantic and has interviewed many of the leading figures in Finnish cultural and political life.

For the past three years Sander, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, has been working on a new, comprehensive history of the Winter War.  His new book, for which he has traveled the length of Finland, as well as to Russia, and interviewed over two dozen veterans and survivors of the war, is scheduled to be published by WSOY in the fall, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Russian invasion of November 30, 1939, and next year in the US by the Cornell University Press

The reading will be moderated by Ilkka Ranta-Aho, a writer and editor for Apu.  A long time friend

and collaborator of Sander‘s, he helped conduct some of the interviews for the book.

Sander will be reading excerpts from his writings about Helsinki from over the years, as well as from his work in progress, The Battle of Finland 1939-40. After the reading he will take questions from the audience.

Warm regards,

Ian
