MARY & SPIRITUALITY
The Virgin Mary has been dubbed “The World’s Most Powerful Woman” by the National Geographic. There is a big emphasis on divine femininity in popular spirituality today. Nevertheless, the ideals associated with Mary of Nazareth have been often put under harsh scrutiny. On the other hand, she is a uniting character, as she is revered in many Christian denominations, as well as in other religions.
Petri Tikka is a Lutheran scholar and pastor, known for his expertise on J. R. R. Tolkien (a Catholic who had a high reverence for Mary) and his languages. Tikka will offer his personal perspectives on the virtues, hopes and songs associated with the Mother of God. Regardless of our different genders and world views, this event will endeavor to ask what we can learn from a hugely influential figure that is often overlooked in the religious and cultural discussions of Finland.
There will also be practical, but tasteful, spirituality in the form of hymns and prayers related to the one who is sometimes called the Queen of Heaven. On the 15th of August, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven is celebrated in many Churches, including the Anglican, Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
