Armas Launis, successes and failures of a Finnish composer in Nice (1930-1959)”
The musical life of the city of Nice has been rather curious. Whereas the natives have often left the city, there has always been a steady stream of composers coming from other countries wishing to live and work there. Bozza or Jaubert have left but Lovreglio, Journeau, Ribollet, Martinů and Armas Launis (and Madetoja not far behind)came and established themselves in the city.
Henri-Claude Fantapié, composer and conductor, first listened to the music of Launis in Nice at the age of fourteen. With his wife Anja he has written two books on Finnish music as well as a large number of articles on Armas Launis and music in Nice.
