‘Donagh Coleman – songs from near and afar’

After years in Ireland, India and China, Finnish-Irish Donagh Coleman is reunited with Tampere’s jazz and electronic music maverick Otto Pulkkinen on guitar, and the favourite drummer of Helsinki’s Indie-scene, Olli Moilanen. The trio is joined by Jarno Lappalainen on double bass, whose recent forays have been into Latin music and jazz. Together, the quartet tackles Donagh‘s melodic songs influenced by Eastern and Western encounters, and his travels as a documentary filmmaker. The musical offerings are poppy in their contours, with hints of folk and Irish tunes. There’s a touch of funkiness, with the spectre of minimalism also lurking nearby – a throwback to Donagh‘s new music studies in Dublin, which were interrupted by collaboration with producer Nick Seymour from legendary Aussie band Crowded House.
