Much of what said of Velvet Underground for the rock & roll scene,
goes for Thelonius Monk in the jazz world. Not so many people bought
his records, but most of those who did, consequently went out and
formed a band. Whether it’s a feeling of “I can do that too” or
“Wow, anything is possible”, or just, “What a wonderful yet
weird tune!”, several kinds of inspirations that Monk radiated are
still orbiting around the world.

Monk was also what brought together the three Helsinki musicians,
groovy drum player Tero Mikkonen, blues bassist Petri
Loikala
, and pianist-composer Jani Päivänen.

Rumor went around town, “There’s a drummer who wants to play
Monk”. This reached the ears of Jani, a life-time fan of Thelonius,
and Petri who was just as eager to attack the classic afresh. And they
sounded mostly OK, so Jani started bringing in some of his own
compositions that also reflect the Monk impact.
