Thursday 16.8 at 6pm at Old Arkadia: ‘Improving learning with student-initiated practice’ by Jake Mc Mullen

Dear friend of Arkadia,

You are heartily invited to ‘Improving learning with student-initiated practice’ by Jake Mc Mullen on Thursday 16.8 at 6pm at Old Arkadia ( Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu 9).

This talk will first focus on the limitations of previous attempts to decrease inequalities in young children’s learning outcomes. An alternative – encouraging children to see opportunities to practice new skills in their everyday world – will be presented.

Working from the now well-known studies of how people become experts in a field (10,000 hours of practice, Malcolm Gladwell, etc.), we examine children’s spontaneous use of maths in situations which are not necessarily mathematical.

Jake Mc Mullen
is a PhD student at the University of Turku, living in Helsinki. There is one publication available on
this topic at utu.academia.edu/JakeMcMullen/Papers

Welcome!

Warm regards,
