The Work by Sophie Woodfield
A painting is an image.
The body of work presented explores the relationship between the act of painting and image making.
The depiction of a space that is created on the canvas attempts to include depth. This depth is very simple and is not an illusion, simply ‘paint
on top of paint’. The formalist structures such as shape, colour and line never fully resolve. They converge as independent forms but there lack of potential and sense are evident and interesting to me.
I am interested in how we perceive beauty and how we are seduced by paint on a surface. The painting is decorative and the image becomes seductive and beautiful. My mark and style are therefore produced. The intentional lack of potential in these paintings is of great importance but my desire for people to be seduced into the way I make a painted image is paramount.
