Of mice and men… And flies: A tale of evolution in science’ by biologist Frederic Michon

During the 2008 US presidential election campaign, Sarah Palin questioned the use of fruit flies by molecular biologists in their research. Even though her comments may be disregarded as prejudiced, it is evident that biologists are not explaining enough of what they are doing.

As my own contribution, I’m proposing a journey from bacteria to human, and from dawn of biology to the 2013 medicine Nobel Prize awarded a few days ago, to understand why us silly biologists are, for example, using flies to study Alzheimer disease.

Bio: Frederic Michon arrived in Finland after his PhD, 6 years ago. As a Docent of the University of Helsinki and an Academy
research fellow, he tries to explain as often as possible the work of a biologist, and more importantly the questions that should be answered to create tomorrow’s medicine.
