Thursday 18.7 at 6pm at Arkadia: Lecture and screening in celebration of 80 years of Popeye the Sailor in cartoons by Veikko Suvanto

You are very welcome to visit us / Arkadia International Bookshop and “like” us if indeed you do!

Dear friend of Arkadia,

You are invited to a lecture and screening celebrating 80 years of Popeye the Sailor in cartoons by Veikko Suvanto on Thursday 18.7 at 6pm at Arkadia (Nervanderinkatu 11)

The occasion for the event is the 80th anniversary of Popeye’s first appearance in an animated cartoon (July 14), as well as the 130th anniversary of the birth of Max Fleischer (July 19), the cartoons’ producer.

The event will feature a talk on the origins of Popeye and the history of the Fleischer Studio by Veikko Suvanto, followed by a screening of some vintage Popeye shorts from the 1930s.

The talk will be in English or Finnish, depending on the wishes of the audience. Questions can be posed in both languages as well. The cartoons will be shown in their original versions, without subtitles.

You are all most welcome.

Warm regards,

Entrance is free but a donation of €3 (or more!) to fund the event is suggested and would be most welcome.

Veikko Suvanto is a translator living in Krakow, Max Fleischer’s birthplace, where he has organized many screenings showcasing the best
achievements of the golden age of American animation, his special field of interest.
