Are There Negative Emotions? : The Transformative Power of Understanding How we Feel

In 1995 Daniel Goleman revolutionized the understanding of human intelligence with the publication
of his bestseller Emotional Intelligence. Goleman argued in his book that the capacity to understand and manage our emotions and emotional states (what he called emotional intelligence) was a key component of human intelligence and peoples´ overall wellbeing. We live better lives when our emotions do not constantly get in our way.

But despite our knowledge of emotional intelligence, it is not easy to put it in practice. I can think about times in which I woke up in the middle of the night feeling anxious and overwhelmed about work, health or my financial situation. Sometimes, I harboured resentment or anger towards somebody, and noticed that those emotions would not just go easily away. Have you ever had similar experiences? Emotions can indeed be rather difficult to manage at times. And when we experience recurrent fear, anger or envy, it is difficult not to think about them in negative terms. But are there negative emotions?
In this talk Manuel Jiménez will reflect on human emotions and invite the participants to look into their own experiences. Years of dealing with intense fear, has helped Manuel deepen his understanding on the roots of human suffering as well as the way out of it. He found that courage and connection can end the circle of suffering, allowing us to be more present and enjoy our lives.

Short Bio
Manuel Jiménez Fonseca has a PhD on Public International Law. For years he worked on Human Right issues in Honduras and Mozambique getting first-hand experience of contexts of intense human suffering. In Mozambique he facilitated a workshop on masculinity and meditation, realizing that awareness of emotions and behavioural patterns contributed to improving peoples’ lives.

Upon his return to Finland he felt he felt compelled to go deeper into the roots of human suffering, focusing his interest in what goes on in peoples´ psyche. As part of that process, he started to study Rosen Method in 2015 and continued organizing workshops on gender, emotional intelligence and relationships. He has also an interest on mindfulness, a practice he started at age 23 after becoming paralyzed by physical pain.
