You are invited by the Virkkilä Family, the Brazil-Finland Cultural Centre and the Embassy of Brazil in Helsinki to the opening of ‘Ville Virkkilä: Family Treasures’ on Thursday 27.2 at 5pm at Arkadia (Nervanderinkatu 11)

Opening event: 27th February – Thursday 5-7pm. The exhibition will last from the 28th February to 6th March, 2020.

Ville Virkkilä (Kotka-Finland, 1921 – Helsinki-Finland, 1998) found the paths of his art in the veins of the wood. He studied fine arts at the University of Art and Design (now Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture) which used to be at Ateneum, currently Finland’s best-known art museum and the home of Finnish art. After the Second World War, he moved with his family to Brazil, where he established himself as a visual artist before returning to Finland and getting recognition also in his native land. Ville Virkkilä’s work was produced between the two homelands and actually united them in a single poetic form, in which both cultures have their marks imposed in the artist’s style.

Ville Virkkilä was a diaspora artist who represented the dream of building Penedo, a small colony founded in Brazil in 1929 by the perseverance of Finnish immigrants who built their destiny there and which, to this day, keeps the traditions, virtues and artistic styles from the distant northern European country. Ville’s genius and work sought his creative vitality in this family environment and this exhibition comprises the retrieving of a life-history entirely dedicated to finding his impressions, memories and essence in the wood. His work, produced at home, in garage workshops, is the portrait of a self-sculpted master, kept and described by the family’s longing, kind and loving gaze.

This exhibition aims to follow the traces left by the artist through the memory of his friends and relatives and through his works that move freely and in a versatile way between the folk figurative to more complex, abstract and modern forms. This search has been carried out by the work of the newly created Ville Virkkilä Research Committee (VVRC), a group formed by Brazilians and Finns that seeks to rescue and preserve the memory of this great master by researching, cataloging and maintaining the family collection and archives.

Ville Virkkilä: Perheen Aarteet

Ville Virkkilä (Kotka, 1921 – Helsinki, 1998) kaiversi tiensä taidemaailmaan puuveistoksilla. Ateneumin Taideteollisessa keskuskoulussa opiskellut Virkkilä muutti toisen maailmansodan jälkeen perheineen Brasiliaan, missä hän loi uransa kuvataiteilijana. Suomeen palattuaan hän sai tunnustusta myös synnyinmaassaan. Virkkilän tuotanto syntyi näiden kahden kotimaan välillä, ja hän yhdisti ne veistokselliseksi runoelmaksi ja tyyliksi, johon kumpikin kulttuuri on jättänyt jälkensä.

Ville Virkkilä oli Penedon unelmaa edustanut diasporataiteilija. Penedo on 1920-luvulla Brasiliaan perustettu pieni siirtokunta, johon suomalaiset maahanmuuttajat valoivat kohtalonsa ja joka tähänkin päivään asti ylläpitää kaukaisen Pohjolan maan perinteitä, ihanteita ja taiteellisia tyylejä. Tässä perheellisessä ympäristössä Virkkilän nerokkuus ja tuotanto saavuttivat hänen taiteellisen elinvoimansa. Virkkilä omisti elämänsä vaikutelmiensa, muistojensa ja olemuksensa ikuistamiseen puuveistosten muotoon, ja tämä näyttely edustaa hänen elämäntyönsä varjelemista. Virkkilän kotonaan ja autotalliverstaissaan luoma tuotanto on mestarin muotokuva, jonka hänen sukunsa on rakkaudella ja kaipuulla säilyttänyt.

Näyttely seuraa Virkkilän jälkeensä jättämiä vihjeitä taiteilijan ystävien ja sukulaisten muistojen kautta. Tarkoituksena on korostaa monimuotoista tapaa, jolla Virkkilän teokset liikkuvat kuvainnollisuuden ja helppotajuisuuden välimaastossa sekä abstrakteissa ja modernin monimutkaisissakin muodoissa. Tutkimuksen on suorittanut hiljattain perustettu brasilialais-suomalainen Ville Virkkilä Research Committee (VVRC), joka pyrkii pelastamaan ja säilyttämään tämän suuren mestarin muiston tutkimalla, luetteloimalla ja ylläpitämällä suvun kokoelmaa ja arkistoja.
