Guro and Sergio met in Helsinki during an Improvisation week workshop in 2014, and ever since they hoped for another opportunity to play together. And here it is!

Guro Gravem Johansen

Associate Professor in Music Education /Co-manager in CEMPE (Centre of Excellence in Music Performance Education) / Norwegian Academy of Music

Guro Gravem Johansen holds a PhD in Music Education from the Norwegian Academy of music, where she also teaches jazz vocal ensemble, voice technique and improvisation, jazz aural training, and instrumental teaching methods for jazz, pop and rock students. She has contributed to several Scandinavian textbook anthologies with articles on topics such as teaching and learning jazz and improvisation from higher education to primary school.

As an educated jazz singer she performs with her own jazz quartet Crazy Moon, and in the ten-piece jazz and folk music orchestra Østerdalsmusikk (“Music from the eastern valley”). Østerdalsmusikk released an album with the same title in January 2015, which received excellent recensions from a large number of folk and jazz critics.

In 2014 she contributed on the Norwegian singer Elin Rosseland´s album Vokal. Johansen has among others worked with the Swedish composer and bass player Georg Riedel, the South African singer Melanie Scholtz, and guitarists such as Georg Wadenius and Jon Eberson, and she has been performing in Holland, South Africa and Sweden as well as in Norway. Her musical background is rooted in mainstream jazz, and she has an extensive experience in teaching free improvisation to mixed amateur choirs.

Sergio Castrillón (Cello performer/Composer/Improviser/Researcher)

Artist interested in sound and any artistic manifestation. As performer he enjoys a constant activity as Cellist of new music, free improvisation, improvisation works with new technologies and collaboration with theatre performers, poetry and contemporary dance. As composer his work incorporates several instrumental formats, including Guitar and solo Cello, Cello and Piano, Trio for Harp and two Cellos, String Quartet, Colombian typical Quartet, Duet for Xylophone and Flute, Brass Quintet, String Orchestra, Percussion ensemble, Quintet and Nonet Vocal Feminine Acapella, Symphonic Band, and several works for Trio of two Cellos and Counterbass.

Over the last 5 years his work has been focused in electroacoustic/instrumental and acousmatic music premiered and performed in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden and Uruguay to name but a few. He has also produced music for audio-visual projects, documentaries, short films, long films, commercial videos, One-Minute Films among others. Currently he is developing his Doctoral research at the University of Helsinki (Finland), participates as board member of KORVAT AUKI, (Composers society), and performs as cellist in different projects such as SERGIO CASTRILLÓN SOLO IMPRO PROJECT, TRIO CASSAG, KORVAT AUKI ENSEMBLE, LAPONIA IMPROVISATION EXPERIMENT, KAIKU DUO and DUO LOS. Since 2013 he has incorporated as composition and improvisation teacher at LAPONIA IMPROVISATIONS.

During the last few years he is developing a subject called: Laboratory of performance exploration and music creation in real time. This subject has been attended by students from different institutions and scopes in South America, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Estonia.
