Experimental music night at Arkadia International Bookshop

“You’ve never heard the cut-up and sample thing done with such absurdist, insane panache and vigour.”(Sound Projector)
Alexei Borisov is known as a live performer with a sound and visual style that make his performances transcend the usual gig situation and resemble Beckett-style theatre. Perhaps the most appropriate term for their soundtrack would be “live collage”, based on found sounds and home recordings of all sorts done diary-style on a cheap dictaphone with Borisov reciting his automatic writing-type lyrics (in Russian and in English) and improvising on home-made electronics. When working as a duo with Anton Nikkilä, Borisov’s low tech noise is put into a stark contrast with the latter’s digital approach. Nikkilä samples “basest” materials like muzak and smooth jazz, which are then cut up, timestretched and resynthesized in the search for a sublime in the heart of their blankness, and finally combined with electric guitars.
Nikkilä and Borisov have been collaborating since 1994.
