Introduction to the Gestalt approach by psychotherapist Katri Suvanto“I’m not put into this world to live up to your expectations and you are not put into this world to live up to mine. I am I and you are you, if we meet that’s fine, and if not, that cannot be helped.” (Hemingway & Perls)
Psychiatrist Frederick (Fritz) Perls made a major contribution to the development of Gestalt therapy in the 1950s. His background was in psychoanalysis which he found too mind-focused, and he experimented with and developed approaches that came to be Gestalt therapy. It was influenced by Gestalt psychology, psychodrama, bodywork and eastern philosophies. It looks at the individual as he or she is now, not the way he or she has been or should be.
For any changes to happen, it is important to learn how I perceive the world, what my perception of life is. The four cornerstones in Gestalt therapy are contact, here and now, awareness and responsibility. The focus is not on the past or looking for someone to blame but on increasing my awareness. The Gestalt approach recognises that our past experiences influence our choices and actions in the here and now and helps us to seek the answers to ‘How am I in contact with others? How am I in contact with myself?’ New awareness helps us make new and better choices.
Anyone who wants to work on a personal issue, increase awareness of themselves, improve their relationships or working life can benefit from the Gestalt approach. With increased self-awareness you can bring unfinished business from the past to a close and set it aside.
