In the industries, agriculture, housing and other human activities the wastes and side stream offer huge potential for development. By using microbial biotechnology it is possible to exploit the conversions prevailing in Nature for the reuse. At the same time, the environmentally and climatologically adverse effects of various activities can be avoided. This contributes positively to safe and adequate food production, novel industrial applications, improved general health, and to many other parameters of our living.

The talk will be in English and Finnish.

Aineiden kiertoa mikrobien avulla – tienä kestävään kehitykseen by Elias Hakalehto

Teollisuudessa, maataloudessa, asumisessa ja muissa yhteiskunnan aktiviteeteissa jätteet ja sivuvirrat tarjoavat merkittävän kehityspotentiaalin. Mikrobiologisen bioteknologian avulla voidaan hyödyntää samoja reaktioita, jotka kierrättävät aineita luonnossa. Samalla saadaan vältettyä haitallisia ympäristö- ja ilmastovaikutuksia. Tällä on positiivinen vaikutus turvalliseen ja riittävään ravinnon tuotantoon, innovatiivisten teollisten sovellusten kehittämiseen, parantuneeseen kansanterveyteen, ja lukemattomiin muihin elämisemme tekijöihin.

CV: PhD, MSc (Agr.Sci.) Elias Hakalehto has acted as the adjunct professor in the biotechnical microbe analytics for the University of Eastern Finland since year 2008. This spring he has applied for the adjunct professorship in the microbiological agroecology in the University of Helsinki. He has graduated as a microbiologist from the University of Helsinki in 1983, from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, and had his academic dissertation in biotechnology in Kuopio in the year 2000. He continued his basic studies at three universities in United Kingdom, including the University College of London Bioengineering department. During his professional activities he has conducted more than 100 research and development projects, and produced tens of patents in the fields of microbial diagnostics and biorefinery activities. During 2012-14 he acted as the key technology provider in bioprocesses for the six nation EU biorefinery project ABOWE, during which project tests related to the circulation of substances in agriculture and industries were carried out in Finland, Sweden and Poland. Elias Hakalehto has outlined several books and chapters for the world leading publishers in e.g. circulation and reuse, microbial hygiene and human microbiome. More than thirty years ago he participated in establishing the environmental section of the Student Union of the Helsinki University, being its first chairman.

CV (in Finnish): FT, MMM Elias Hakalehto on toiminut Itä-Suomen yliopiston bioteknisen mikrobianalytiikan dosenttina vuodesta 2008. Tänä keväänä hän on hakenut mikrobiologisen agroekologian dosentiksi Helsingin Yliopistoon. Koulutukseltaan hän on mikrobiologi ja bioteknologi, joka on valmistunut Helsingin Yliopistosta, sen maatalousmetsätieteellisestä tiedekunnasta vuonna 1983, ja väitellyt Kuopiossa vuonna 2000. Hän on suorittanut jatko-opintoja kolmessa yliopistossa Englannissa, mm. University College of Londonin Bioengineering-yksikössä. Työurallaan hän on toteuttanut yli sata kehitysprojektia ja tuottanut kymmenittäin patentteja mm. mikrobidiagnostiikkaan ja biojalostustoimintaan liittyen. Vuosina 2012-24 hän toimi teknologiantoimittajana EU:n Itämeren alueen kuuden maan ABOWE biojalostusprojektissa, jonka testauksia aineiden kiertoon liittyen tehtiin Suomessa, Ruotsissa ja Puolassa liittyen ainekiertoon teollisuudessa ja maataloudessa. Elias Hakalehto on kirjoittanut useita kirjoja ja lukuja maailman johtaville kustantajille liittyen mm. aineiden kiertoon, mikrobihygieniaan ja elimistön mikrobitasapainoon. Yli kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten hän oli perustamassa Helsingin Yliopiston Ylioppilaskunnan ympäristöjaostoa toimien sen ensimmäisenä puheenjohtajana.
