FREE IMPROVISATION PERFORMANCE FOR SAXOPHONES, SOUND OBJECTS, ELECTRONICS AND CELLO

Harri Sjöström (Saxophone)

Born in February 29th 1952; studied saxophone with Harry Mann, Leo Wright and Steve Lacy, Friedhelm Schönfeld. He also studied photography and film at the Lone Mountain College in San Francisco Art Institute from 1974 – 1978, a.o. with Greg Mac Gregor and Larry Sultan; He attended the special class for improvisation at the L.M.C. (UCSF) led by trombonist Johannes Mager.

After leaving the U.S., Harri moved to Vienna, Austria, which became his doorway to the European improvised music scene. Harri formed his first improvising groups and organised numerous projects in Finland and elsewhere. Brought many of the most notable innovators on the international improvisation scene to Finland. One of his early projects included a tour with Derek Bailey’s “Company” which was their first in Finland. Harri moved to Berlin in 1985.
In 1990, Harri met Cecil Taylor in Berlin and has been involved in a large number of projects with the legendary pianist and composer since.

Harri founded the international ‘QUINTET MODERNE’ and co-founded ‘THE PLAYER IS’ trio with Teppo Hauta-Aho and Philipp Wachsmann. More recent groups are a.o. a large ensemble ECIO www.ecio-music.com, MOVE – quintet (Adam Pultz Melbye, Emilio Gordoa, Dag Magnus Narvesen, Achim Kaufmann, Mateusz Ribicki); New quartet with Benedict Taylor, Tom Jackson and Emilio Gordoa; „Sestetto Internazionale (Gianni Mimmo, Alison Blunt, Ignaz Schick, Veli Kujala, Achim Kaufmann)

Harri also performs solo occasionaly and is involved with multi media projects.

Sjöström has recorded and performed with many leading musicians and real time composers including Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Tristan Honsinger, Teppo Hauta-Aho, Alex von Schlippenbach…

Gianni Mimmo (Saxophone)

Soprano sax player and composer in the fields of jazz and experimentation on his own original projects mainly focused on relationship among distant artistic declinations, Mimmo has built an international reputation for his unique treatment of musical timbre and his exploration of advanced techniques.

His style has developed a unique blend of abstract lyricism and contemporary flavors and his productions have been excellently reviewed by international magazines and webzines.

His current projects include collaboration with musicians as John Russell, Daniel Levin, Harry Sjöström, Alison Blunt, Hannah Marshall, Elisabeth Harnik, Clementine Gasser, Lawrence Casserley, Martin Mayes, Gino Robair, Jean-Michel van Schouwburg, Nicholas Isherwood, Ove Volquarts, Gianni Lenoci Cristiano Calcagnile, Nicola Guazzaloca, Xabier Iriondo, Peter Brötzmann, Enzo Rocco, Angelo Contini, Stefano Pastor, Stefano Giust, Alessio Pisani, with dancers Marcella Fanzaga, Norontako Bagus Kentus, Sebastian Prantl, photographer Elda Papa, video artists, and poets as well.
He extensively tours in Europe and USA invited by international festivals and venues and runs the indie label Amirani records.

James Andean (Sound objects and electronics)

Musician and sound artist. He is active as both a composer and a performer in a range of fields, including electroacoustic composition and performance, improvisation, sound installation, and sound recording. He is a founding member of improvisation and new music quartet Rank Ensemble, and one half of audiovisual performance art duo Plucié/DesAndes. He has performed throughout Europe and North America, and his works have been presented around the world. He is a lecturer at the Centre for Music & Technology of the Sibelius Academy/University of the Arts Helsinki.

Sergio Castrillón (Cello)

Artist interested in sound and any creative manifestation. As composer his work incorporates several formats including instrumental acoustic, electroacoustic, acousmatic and multimedia. His pieces have been performed and premiered in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay. As performer he enjoys a constant activity as cellist of new music, free improvisation, improvised works with new technologies and collaborations with theatre performers, poetry and contemporary dance. Currently he lives in Helsinki where develops an active career as performer, composer, improviser and educator. Since 2013 Castrillón has been working on his Doctoral research at the University of Helsinki.
