At Arkadia Sari will present a video artwork titled ‘(Be)longing’ which presents a portrait of Finnish-Australians living in Queensland, Australia. Since early 2013 Kivinen has conducted video interviews with people of Finnish heritage living in Queensland as part of a broader artistic research project titled ‘Mining Doughnuts: Finnish Queenslanders’. A selection of the interviews have been edited for the video ‘(Be)longing’, which explores ideas about belonging and not-belonging; to place, to language, and to culture. The interviewees are a combination of first, second and third generation Finnish-Australians who share stories, thoughts, and feelings connected to their Finnish and to their Australian heritage. The narratives presented weave together individual stories that subsequently portray a snapshot of migration experiences and cultural identity of Finns in Queensland. The development of this project has been supported by Kone Foundations Multilingualism and Art programme.
