Text by Jimmy Pulli
A couple of years ago I made a sculptural installation, Present-tense, which was supposed to have a limited lifespan due to the perishable nature of the matter from which it was made. Four life-size brains, made from ordinary household jelly, equipped with a kind of nervous system made
from optical fibre which lit up as viewers approached the objects. The brains dried up and shrunk, a metaphor for a natural human aging process. But as they did not perish completely, the brains found new use in my art: In photographs, they turned out to have eerie humanoid features, and the hardened dried-out shells of gelatin became centerpieces and inspiration for new sculptural works. In the exhibition Mind Over Matter I show the photographs and remnants of what once was an image of the perishable nature of man, but turned into an allegory for the longevity and renewable nature of thoughts and ideas, the second life of the mind.
