The Truly Ugly Duckling

Project by Chan, Yung-Jen

Chan, Yung-Jen is an artist, prop maker, sculpture teacher from Taiwan, now live in Helsinki for exchange program in MFA. The forms of her work include sculpture, installation, photography, social projects, lights, and sounds. If her work must be defined within a field, perhaps they fall between sculpture and installation. She uses different materials to build her sculptures, and uses the sculptures to make installations. The materials she uses always have strong symbols to describe society or the relationships between humans. She combines different forms or objects and attempts to use these objects to compare and discuss the different relationships between selves, individuals, bodies, groups, society, and other elements from small to large.

The Truly Ugly Duckling is a part of project since 2016, which based on those well- known tales and make a new story in modern society. In this exhibition, I wrote a story based on Hans Christian Andersens The Ugly Duckling, which named The Truly Ugly Duckling. In this way of telling a story, I attempt to put issues which was happened in reality into a fiction or a tale, trying to use an ironic but interesting way to discuss serious issues often be ignored in the our textbook, media, or reality. We keep talking about different concepts about longing for better world, for example equal rights, humanity, freedom, love, hope…,but somehow the world is not that simple, and people always do something against their believes. I want to make a book looks similar to those perfect model textbook-style tale, but if we read the story its actually a story closer to society we live. The book shows not only a new story but cultural, historical views of things have happened in Taiwan, and I put these book in the real fiction area of the bookshop, make a mixture view between real and virtual. The exhibition combines with three parts, one is in Fictionarea and a short video. The other one is in Gallery space and Ill curate a book shelf size exhibition, choose the similar topics of books as a link, or some keys to my picture book.
