“77 Seine-et-Marne”
About the exhibition
Living for six months in the backwoods of Fontainebleau forest, just 60 kilometres south of Paris, was an update on the imagery made famous by so many 19th Century painters and artists. The beauty is still there, and the collision with the Atom Age passed with minimum damage, but beyond the flowers and cherry trees one can see glimpses of an enforced, segregated society, limited in its ways to deal with the global challenges in the piece of countryside the Parisians consider Paradise.
Biography
Sanna Karvonen (born in 1975 Oulu, Finland) is an independent filmmaker and photographer.
Having graduated as BBA in business administration, BA in media studies and MA in fiction filmmaking plus several years in administration and marketing in international companies, she co-founded IntoProductions and works now by doing corporate videos, music videos, artist showreels and obviously independent films. “Made to Order” (a short film she produced and shot) was nominated by the Royal Television Society, UK in 2009 and “Paper Dinosaurs” was screened at the Leith Short Film Festival in Edinburgh, UK the same year.
Sanna collects old cameras and uses them in her work as often as possible. She mixes different styles and techniques such as pinhole photography and digital. Her work explores the concepts of time and place, the history and the present, and often builds a fascinating world not tied to our time and age.
Sanna‘s photos have been published in national and local newspapers and magazines in Finland since 1994. She spent the first half of 2012 doing a photo documentary of rural versus suburbian France, which will be exhibited at Arkadia International Bookshop in Helsinki 4.9. – 15.9.2012.
