ICTs and resistance against human rights violations before the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics in Rio

Description: The preparations of Rio de Janeiro for the coming FIFA World Cup 2014 and Summer Olympic Games 2016 have been marked by Human Rights violations against urban poor from favelas (Brazilian kinds of slums). Examples include arbitrary home evictions and coercive police surveillance. In order to denounce governmental abuses, different civil society actors have used information and communication technologies (ICTs) to create alliances, to make cases public and to mobilize citizens (especially young people) for online and on-spot demonstrations. This presentation will make a brief historical overview of the problematic relationship between the ruling elites and the poor, describe the characteristics of today’s resistance groups and their use of ICTs, and present different cases and outcomes
of civil society reactions to the impacts of the preparations for the megaevents in Rio.
